Humans are closely related to crying as an expression of emotion, we cry when we feel sad or grief, is this the same for turtles? Or do turtles cry when they are sick or grieving or is there another reason? Why do turtles cry?

Sea turtles cry to get rid of excess salt from their bodies. Turtles maintain the salt content in their bodies by crying, the accumulation of excess salt is very toxic to their bodies, so to get rid of excess salt, land turtles shed tears to protect their eyes from the influence of dust and keep them moist.

When we understand all the factors associated with turtle crying

Scientific reasons behind turtle crying

Turtles do not cry like humans or like other animals.

Neither do they shed tears when they are sick, sad or emotional. instead there is a scientific reason for their crying.

Most of the marine turtles spend a considerable amount time in the sea

Due to saltwater, salt accumulates in their bodies, as they drink water.

Reptile don't have efficient kidneys like humans.

So, turtles can't excrete the excess salt through urine, it's done through their eyes.

There is a secret gland in the turtle's eye.

Turtles shed tears as they remove excess salt from their bodies through salty tears.
